The zoo is a pretty safe option. Kids all ages like the zoo, and the one in Auckland is quite nice. The penguin enclosure and the sea lions are nice (you can see them from an underwater viewing window). The African animals enclosure can also be fun. The zoo is on Motions Rd, Western Springs, the admission is 13 NZ$ and it's open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm (last admission is at 4:15 pm).
