perhaps the best budget option near the airport is Skyway Lodge, located on 30 Kirkbride Rd. the owner seemed very friendly and helpful to me, last time I've been there. I even got a free ride to the airport, or was that included in the price? anyway, I slept in a dorm with four beds and I cooked my own meal in the kitchen. I'm sure you'll be satisfied with it, 'cause it's only NZ$24 per bed per night.
